University of Wrocław!
The American Literature and Culture Section at the Department of English Studies, University of Wrocław, is a teaching-and-research unit comprising faculty and doctoral candidates. We welcome alumni, current and prospective students, and visitors who wish to learn about our programs and to explore the range of courses, activities, and events we offer.
Our scholarly interests are related to the history, culture and literature of the United States, a country whose immense cultural impact on the world calls both for continuing interpretations and for maintaining a critical distance.
We offer a range of courses:
- at the undergraduate level: courses in US History, survey courses in American literature, courses in American studies, critical theory, cultural studies, ethnic American literatures, as well as in practical English (grammar, expository writing and vocabulary).
- at the graduate level: cutting-edge seminars and courses that integrate literary and cultural studies with other disciplines such as psychology, philosophy, gender, race and film studies, ethnography, linguistics and the cognitive sciences.
- at the postgraduate level: individually-tailored seminars and tutorials for doctoral candidates who work under the supervision of the professors in our Section.
We appreciate critical and methodological openness. We seek and embrace new approaches to literary and cultural studies, but without compromising the traditional strengths of these two disciplines.
We sponsor occasional seminars, author meetings, guest talks, colloquia, conferences and other events. We seek to provide our academic community and the citizens of Wrocław with a context for sustained learning and debate about American literature and culture.
Our commitment to creative and intellectual community is reflected in our faculty, distinguished by their international publishing record and active in various Polish, European and American scholarly organizations.
